Cabinet ministers rally behind Malcolm Turnbull over climate and energy policy

Senior Turnbull government ministers have mobilised in the wake of Tuesday night's heated meeting of Coalition MPs on the vexed issue of climate change and energy policy.

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann, Prime Minister
Malcolm Turnbull and Treasurer Scott Morrison.
Energy and Environment Minister Josh Frydenberg, Treasurer Scott Morrison and Finance Minister Mathias Cormann emphasised on Wednesday morning that "business as usual" is not an option and the recommendations contained in a recent review by chief scientist Alan Finkel are just the beginning of a long-term policy process.

In the special meeting, a core group of backbenchers - led by former prime minister Tony Abbott - pushed back against a proposed Clean Energy Target (CET) proposed by Dr Finkel. Others were supportive of the plan.

The confrontation has reignited tensions over climate change within the Coalition.
