Hydrogen is already being used as a fuel, like
 this hydrogen-powered forklift in Japan. 

The intense interest in hydrogen is primarily based on fundamental chemistry. The reaction of hydrogen with air releases energy without producing carbon dioxide or any other greenhouse gases.
