Leonardo Dicaprio just made another movie about global warming

Academy Award-winning actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio just produced another movie about climate change.
Leonardo DiCaprio has produced "Ice on Fire" for HBO.
Called “Ice on Fire,” the new HBO documentary goes beyond the current climate crisis and presents cutting-edge solutions to reducing carbon in the atmosphere, which could potentially slow down global warming.

Filming took place in Norway, Alaska, Iceland, Colorado, Switzerland, Costa Rica, and Connecticut to gain first-hand accounts from farmers, scientists, and innovators alike.

The new environmental documentary is jointly produced by DiCaprio, his father George, and screenwriter Matthew Schmid. Leila Conners –who first collaborated with DiCaprio on the 2007 docu-drama “The 11th Hour” — directs.

Leonardo DiCaprio: climate fight is US history's 'biggest economic opportunity'

Leonardo Di Caprio received a prize from
the UN for his work as a global citizen.
Tackling climate change is the “biggest economic opportunity” in the history of the US no matter who holds political office, the Hollywood star and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio said on Friday.

“There are a few very prominent people that still deny the overwhelming conclusions of the world’s scientists that climate change is largely human-caused and needs immediate urgent attention,” he told a United Nations awards ceremony.

But “the truth” about climate change has spread like “wildfire”, he said.

DiCaprio’s comments, as he received a prize for his work as a global citizen, did not refer to the US president-elect, Donald Trump, by name but were a thinly-veiled reference to his views and nominations of climate sceptics with oil industry ties for cabinet posts.

Earlier this month, 42-year-old DiCaprio and the head of his foundation met Trump and his team, reportedly arguing that support for renewable energy could create millions of jobs.

DiCaprio’s documentary calls for a green future, but his vision isn’t radical enough

Leonardo DiCaprio - he calls
 for a green future, but
 his vision isn't bold enough.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s new climate change documentary, Before the Flood, began streaming online this week. As a disaster risk scientist, I watched with intrigue.

While it doesn’t cover a lot of new material for those familiar with the topic, DiCaprio will undoubtedly reach a new audience given his star power and access to figures like Pope Francis and US President Barack Obama.

At the time of writing, the film has been watched more than 6 million times on YouTube alone. Clearly, it will make a significant contribution to the contemporary discussion around climate change, much like Al Gore’s  An Inconvenient Truth a decade ago.

Read the thoughts of a senior lecturer in Construction Management and Disaster Risk Reduction at the University of Newcastle, Jason von Meding, on The Conversation – “DiCaprio’s documentary calls for a green future, but his vision isn’t radical enough.”

Piers Sellers is inspirational in "Before the Flood'

-       Robert McLean
Piers Sellers - inspirational!
Piers Sellers is an optimist and his brief appearance was for me the highlight of Leonardo DiCaprio’s movie, ‘Before the Flood”.

The NASA scientist and former astronaut has been diagnosed with terminal stage four pancreatic cancer and even though the 60-year-old will not see the outcome (his admission), he is absolutely positive humanity will respond positively to the unfolding threats of climate change.

The entire Before the Flood movie can be watched now, but the suggestion is that it will be taken off-line this weekend – I urge you to watch it as it thoroughly reinforces the need to each of us to do what we can to see our governments and the world community to do quickly what obviously needs to be done.

right now." - Oscar winner
Leonardo DiCaprio seizes the moment.

“Climate change is real. It is happening right now,” DiCaprio continued. “It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating.” (You can watch the full speech here.)
