Another view on letter writing

A Beneath the Wisteria friend is not so confident about the power or influence of Letter to the Editor, saying “they change nothing”.

This thoughtful fellow argues that only more direct action, in some instances bordering on civil disobedience, will have any useful impact.

He writes:

“The essence of politics is self-interest, as indeed is Democracy. But Democracy engages and empowers people if you can make a compelling case. So the question isn't why, it's how? You really want to communicate? Be subversive. Write on a footpath in chalk. Run off 1,000 leaflets and deliver them directly to letterboxes, make a speech in the middle of a busy shopping centre every day, three times a day, make a banner a hang it across the Benalla Road, recruit a group of people and start a chant. Be prepared to be annoying, persistent and repetitive. Letters change nothing”.

Interesting thoughts and ideas that most certainly will need considering if we are to have any real impact on slowing the rapid advance of climate change.
