Record breaking temperatures in 2019, warns Met Office.

A new report by the Met Office has found that 2019 could be a record-breaking year for global temperatures due to climate change.
The British Met Office has warned of record-breaking temperatures in 2019.
The Met Office forecasts the global average temperature for 2019 to be between 0.98 degrees Celsius and 1.22 degrees Celsius, with a central estimate of 1.10 degrees Celsius.

Since 1850, 2016 is the warmest year on record with a central estimate of 1.15 degrees Celsius above the baseline.

The forecast is based on modest warming from El Nino combined with much larger effects due to rising levels of greenhouse gases.

Lost at sea: the race against time to save the Carteret Islands from climate change

They were supposed to be underwater by now.

Children help with the work on Carteret Island.

The Carteret Islands in the Pacific were the first place in the world to require population relocations due to climate change related sea level rises, with predictions they would be submerged by 2015.

However the islands are still there sitting roughly 90 kilometres from northern Bougainville, but only just — with a highest point of just 1.5 metres, the atolls are vulnerable to even slight sea level rises.

Climate change risk for half of plant and animal species in biodiversity hot-spots

Up to half of plant and animal species in the world’s most naturally rich areas, such as the Amazon and the Galapagos, could face local extinction by the turn of the century due to climate change if carbon emissions continue to rise unchecked.

The Amazon, Miombo Woodlands in Southern Africa, and south-west Australia are among the most affected places in the world, according to new research.

Even if the Paris Climate Agreement 2°C target is met, these places could lose 25% of their species according to a landmark new study by the University of East Anglia (UK), the James Cook University (Australia), and WWF.
