What does this mean for our global fight against climate change and what does this mean for our ability to address the climate emergency in the future?

The current global health crisis has created grave uncertainties across the world. In response, governments have brought in unprecedented measures to curb the spread of the virus - the steps to restrict movement and mass gatherings, as well as the implementation of economic stimulus packages across the globe have not been seen during peacetimes.

Whilst COVID-19 has seemingly put environmental diplomacy on hold with the postponement of COP26 and the 15th Biodiversity COP, what does the current global health crisis mean for ongoing climate crisis? In a year in which global political and business leaders are meant to put climate change first, what impact will this pandemic have on our collective ability to address the climate emergency?

Reaching out across the faiths to understand climate change

Wrestling with and understanding climate change demands that we cross many boundaries, including those of the world’s faiths and beliefs.

Climate Outreach (formerly COIN) is a charity focused on building cross-societal acceptance of the need to tackle climate change.

Climate Outreach says: “We have over 10 years of experience helping our partners to talk and think about climate change in ways that reflect their individual values, interests and ways of seeing the world.

“We work with a wide range of partners including central, regional and local governments, charities, business, faith organisations and youth groups.”

And now, George Marshall, who is the Director of Projects at Climate Outreach, has been the lead author in a document that explores the narratives of five religious groups and how they relate to climate change.

He and the Research Director at Climate Outreach, an Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Psychology at Cardiff University, Dr Adam Corner; a researcher and project coordinator at Climate Outreach, Olga Roberts; and the Executive Director of Climate Outreach, Jamie Clarke, have written the document - “Faith and Climate Change: A guide to talking with the five major faiths.”

Join climate researcher and activist Camila Moreno and Local Futures Director Helena Norberg-Hodge appear on a webinar for a frank talk about climate change, pseudo-solutions and systemic strategies for real change.

The recent climate agreement in Paris has been hailed as “historic”, yet the root causes of climate change were neither discussed as part of the negotiations, nor addressed in the agreement.

This is a chance to get debriefed about what really took place in Paris and to explore where we go from here.

“We will discuss common myths in the climate debate, expose pseudo-solutions and pinpoint key strategies to achieve lasting change,” the webinar organizers said.

Issues that will be discussed include:

Blaming individuals while ignoring industrial polluters; “free trade” treaties as the driving force behind climate change; commercial truths behind the climate negotiations; carbon trading and zero-net emissions myths; and global to local steps to climate and planetary health.
