Last Menindee cotton harvest is underway as water dries up

The last-ever cotton harvest in far west New South Wales is under way at Tandou near Menindee, signalling the end of large-scale irrigated agriculture in the region.

The 79,000-hectare property will be converted to a dorper lamb business over the next several years.

The Federal Government bought back Tandou's 22,000 megalitre water allocation last year, handing over $78 million to owner Webster Limited.

Property manager Robert Lowe said the decision to sell the water rights came after a run of tough years caused by a water shortage.

Victorian power bills soar after Hazelwood coal plant closure

Power bills for Victorians have soared one year on from the abrupt closure of the ailing Hazelwood power station but the state has managed to dodge large-scale blackouts and greenhouse gas emissions have dived.
Hazelwood was the biggest coal-fired power station to close in 20 years.
With fewer than six months to prepare for the demise of the brown coal-fired plant in the Latrobe Valley,  authorities had to scramble to minimise the blow from the loss of one-fifth of the state's generation capacity.

Australia’s first large solar + storage plant connected to the grid

The first large-scale solar and big battery storage installation in Australia – the Lakeland project near Cooktown in far north Queensland – has been officially connected to the grid.

The 10.8MW solar facility, combined with a 1.4MW/5.3MWh battery storage facility is located near the very edge of the grid and when first announced in 2016 was being pitched as a world-first for remote, edge of grid technology, and one that would trigger a host of similar projects across Australia.

The project had been due for completion nearly six months ago under its original timetable, but the complexity of the first-of-its-type project – for the developers, the local grid owner, and the market operator – pushed the timetable back.

It has been feeding into the grid since late November, but only recently completed its full sign off with Ergon, the local network operator, and the Australian Energy Market Operator.

The Shepparton resident is hoping to raise awareness of this new frontier for the solar industry.

With electricity costs rising rapidly, Dan believes renewable energy provides the solution for the future with wind, solar and battery storage solutions available to clients.

Having lived in Shepparton most of his life, Dan has seen first-hand the effect electricity prices can have on people.

‘‘I am here to help people in the Goulburn Valley by offering them my best advice at the best price,’’ he said.

Dan specialises in battery storage solutions which he believes offer people a number of benefits.

The batteries mean people can store solar energy from the day to be used later on that night.

Dan is hoping to eventually have a shopfront to offer his services on a larger scale.

Renewable energy investment 'bonanza' is coming to Australia, experts say

Investment experts say Australia is fast becoming an attractive destination for large-scale batteries and renewable investment, which should ultimately bring down the costs of gas and electricity for households.

drawn the eyes of the global investment community.
The world's second-most powerful battery could be built in the Top End as part of a plan to produce more renewable energy for the Northern Territory, following the installation of Elon Musk's 100-megawatt battery in South Australia.

The Climate Council has called it a renewable investment bonanza.

"We will see I think a boom over the next decade in battery storage and also solar thermal, we're starting to see that play out now in South Australia," the Climate Council's Andrew Stock said.

Mr Musk drew plenty of media attention when he announced he would build a 100-megawatt battery in South Australia.

States leave federal government in the shade when it comes to renewables: report

NSW has the most large-scale renewable energy projects under way in Australia, and lifted its share of clean energy markedly in the past year, as states and territories take the lead in decarbonising the electricity sector, a report by the Climate Council has found.

The states are leading the way on
renewables, a new report finds. 
A jump in hydropower helped raise renewable energy share in NSW by 5 percentage points last year to 17 per cent. That was marginally above the national share of 16 per cent, and the second-biggest increase after South Australia.

The Climate Council, though, rated by the most populous state behind all but Western Australia and the Northern Territory. While NSW has a net-zero economy-wide emissions target for 2050, it has not set a goal for renewables.

By contrast, Victoria gained credit for its efforts to legislate this year a 25 per cent renewable energy share by 2020 and 40 per cent by 2025. Last year, the state's share was 12 per cent, up one percentage point from 2015.

Turnbull says Tasmania wind, hydro can become ‘energy battery’ for Australia

Prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has extended his vision of large-scale pumped hydro and storage to Tasmania, outlining plans to expand the island’s existing hydropower system, and possibly add 2,500MW in pumped hydro, and describing the possibility that the state could become the “renewable energy battery” for Australia.

The announcement comes just weeks after Turnbull unveiled a new study to investigate the so-called “Snowy 2.0”, a plan to add 2GW – with up to 175 hours of storage – in pumped hydro capacity in the Snowy Mountains; a move that would effectively kill the prospect of new coal or gas plants.

The latest announcement, made in Launceston with the Tasmanian premier and the state-owned Hydro Tasmania on Thursday, canvasses the possibility of adding a new cable between the island and the mainland, and significantly boosting both hydro capacity and wind energy to supply “baseload” renewables to the major markets.

Solar may save the day - the Shepparton News

What could be Victoria’s largest solar farm on a site south of Mooroopna will go lengths to restoring certainty for the region’s producers following Hazelwood’s closure and amid rising electricity prices, Greater Shepparton City Council says.

An expression of interest call-out period has recently concluded for parties interested in leasing a slab of local land to build a large-scale solar facility in Greater Shepparton.

Council’s investment attraction manager Geraldine Christou says more details on the to-be-constructed facility capable of producing a minimum of 10 megawatts will be released in June.
She hopes the facility will reverse uncertainty caused by extra energy costs estimated as being in the millions for some businesses.

‘‘It’s no secret that (in) business and industry, there’s uncertainty at the moment,’’ Ms Christou said.

‘‘Businesses at the moment ... are rethinking their decision to expand, and that’s based around uncertainty about their overheads and in particular their electricity prices.’’

‘‘Anything we as a council can do to minimise that impact, create certainty and confidence for our own community, as well as investors, is of benefit to the community,’’ she said.
Committee for Greater Shepparton chairman Rob Priestly had observed sharp increases to the price of electricity since the announcement of Hazelwood’s closure.

He expected investment in solar and renewables to pick up from here.
Mr Priestly estimated most industrial users in the region were looking at electricity price rises of between 70 and 100 per cent in an economic environment where it was difficult to be recouped.

Heavy manufacturing and producers in the region were reliant on high quality and reasonable cost energy.

He said some could be suffering extra energy costs into the millions this year.
‘‘Prices were moving upwards in the lead up to Hazelwood (closure),’’ he said.
‘‘But certainly they have moved strongly since that announcement.’’

‘‘The energy price ... it’s now at a level where you’ll see very significant investment in renewables.’’

Ms Christou said 10megawatts would contribute to the energy supply within the Goulburn Valley, but also send a clear message about Greater Shepparton’s appetite for renewable energy and its objective to help local business be competitive.

She said a clear challenge emerging from engagement with business and industry was the rising cost of power and the uncertainty that creates.

While Mr Priestly, also Gouge’s director, welcomed additional renewable supply, he stressed the need for a reliable energy supply outside of daylight hours.

‘‘The conversation needs to be around what happens outside hours the sun shines. There needs to be a system (where it’s) available in those hours,’’ he said.

‘‘Storage may or may not be able to fill the massive demand, time will tell.

‘‘With electricity moving the way it is ... there will be huge investment in solar in the next 12 months.’’

He said this was set to further destabilise the electricity grid without supplementation by either gas generation or significant battery storage.

The council has in the past said it had received interest in developing the GV Link site east of Toolamba Rd and the railway line for construction and use as a solar farm.

A report to a council meeting last year detailed that the council had been in discussions with parties interested in leasing land for a ‘‘large-scale’’ solar farm.

Solar plant plan

With its proximity to Melbourne and ‘solar city’ potential, GV Community Energy chief executive Geoff Lodge believes the region holds an advantage in being considered for a proposal to power Melbourne’s tram network via solar plants.

Mr Lodge believes a Greater Shepparton City Council proposal to create a large-scale solar farm, now accepting expressions of interest, would be compatible with the Victorian Government proposal.

The government last week revealed Melbourne’s would be powered by a large-scale solar plant to be built in regional Victoria. It would run an open tender in the first half of 2017 to help build 75MW of new large-scale solar farms by the end of 2018, a statement said.

Melbourne trams to be solar-powered under Andrews government proposal

Using solar power for Melbourne trams is
 designed to boost investment in renewables
and create new jobs for Victorians.
Melbourne’s tram network will become entirely solar-powered under a proposal by the Andrews government to build large-scale solar farms in northern Victoria.

The proposal, announced on Thursday, is part of a plan to reduce Victoria’s net carbon emissions to zero by 2050. Tenders to build and operate 75MW of new solar farms will be released in early 2017 and the first solar power plant is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.

The environment and energy minister, Lily D’Ambrosio, said 35MW of the generating power of the new solar plants would be dedicated to running Melbourne’s tram network, which would reduce the city’s greenhouse gas emissions by 80,000 tonnes a year.

Large-scale solar plant now working at Nyngan in NSW


T

he first section of the Nyngan Solar Plant in western New South Wales is online and feeding renewable energy into the National Electricity Market.

Close to 350,000 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are producing up to 25 MW of electricity. Once complete, the plant will output up to 102 MW, enough to power 33,000 homes per year.

ARENA CEO, Ivor Frischknecht, congratulated AGL and First Solar on the achievement and said the project is paving the way for more large-scale solar plants to be built in Australia.
