The Liberal candidate in Wentworth, Dave Sharma, has called for Australia to do more on the international stage to address climate change, declaring this is “where our efforts can have the biggest impact”.

could itself do.

These efforts should include trying to turn around the United States’ decision to leave the Paris agreement, Sharma told the Coalition for Conservation on Tuesday night.

As Scott Morrison this week has sought to boost his government’s credentials on the climate issue, Sharma said a small improvement in the emissions trajectories of large emitters such as China would have much greater impact than anything Australia could itself do.

Government must help farmers to meet climate challenge, NFU says

The UK government must do more to help farmers invest in their businesses to meet the increasing challenges brought by extreme weather, according to the NFU. 

The challenges faced by farmers grow
increasingly difficult as climate change worsens.

The union’s call for more government assistance to enable farmers to invest in their businesses was made as a new Met Office study showed the UK’s climate is changing, with an increasing trend for warmer and wetter weather.

A report by the forecaster, published on Friday (2 November), revealed further details about the UK’s climate since the 1960s.

Forget Trump: Europe plans to push for more ambition on climate

Trump or no Trump, the European Union is set to spur businesses to do more to meet the Paris climate accord goals.

Taking a long view and encouraging companies to front-load actions to cap future costs will be among the thrusts of the climate push for the bloc's executive suites.

In its longer-term strategy to be presented in November to achieve targets set under the Paris accord, the European Commission is considering options ranging from lowering greenhouse-gas discharges by 80 per cent by 2050 compared with 1990 levels to net-zero emissions by mid-century.

"Having a 2050 perspective helps people accept more ambitious paths," Mauro Petriccione, the director general for climate at the EU's regulatory arm, said in an interview in Brussels.

One of Spain’s largest banks has called on financial institutions to do more to tackle climate change.

“Banks need to help customers drive sustainable development and transition towards a low-carbon economy”, said Francisco González, BBVA’s Executive Chairman.

“The burden of responsibility that rests on humanity’s shoulders is unprecedented.”

He was speaking at the opening of a forum on sustainable finance, hosted by the bank in Madrid, which was also attended by Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister.
